The winter of 2012 is one of the coldest in years in the Netherlands so there is only one thing to do, go skating. In the 14th Century, the Dutch started using wooden platform skates with flat iron bottom runners. The skates were attached to the skater's shoes with leather straps. The painting in the first scene of this video is one of our famous winter landscape painters, Hendrick Avercamp, 1585 - 1634.
